A tree is our most intimate contact with nature
— George Nakashima

We all know how great it is to feel a connection, a link with the world, and a feeling of being grounded and connected with the environment we live and the community we are part of. At Highwood furniture we work with locally sourced Scottish timbers to create wooden pieces that are rooted in that feeling.

From bespoke furniture pieces designed to embrace the beauty of wood, enhance your living space, and reflect your eye for quality right through to gift and household items that do the same there is something for everyone at Highwood Furniture.

“Colin used his creative genius and designed a beautiful bespoke piece for a family heirloom. Absolutely stunning.”

“Colin discussed my rather vague brief, and offered a choice of designs. The work of art he created was even more beautiful than I could have hoped for! True craftsmanship and an obvious love and understanding for wood.”

About

Highwood Furniture produces beautiful yet functional pieces of furniture, built with care and precision in order to match your lifestyle, character and needs. Tailored for you and created with locally sourced sustainable woods like Scottish Oak, Ash, Sycamore and the beautiful but unfortunately diminishing Elm.

Highwood Furniture is dedicated to producing high quality, life long pieces using these amazing natural materials. The pursuit for this comes from the founder Colin Bate and his love for the outdoors, natures beauty, his enjoyment in being creative and his eye for precision. Colin trained at and graduated from the renowned Chippendale International School of Furniture and is a member of the Fine Furniture Guild. Frequently getting lost in his work for hours, Colin's objective with every piece is to make something that customers will love as much as he loved making. Working alongside Hannah since 2021, they now bring different insights into each joint project and individual item and enjoy exploring new design ideas and techniques.

Sustainability

Highwood Furniture seeks to source timber as locally as possible, and holds sustainability as a core value. We secure our timber for projects from sawmills who source timber in Scotland, and also look to build links with local tree surgeons. We have even been known to sell pieces made from branches from our own garden.

We make the most of each piece of timber that comes through our workshop, with any larger excess not suitable for a creative project becoming a useful heat source, and smaller wood chippings being composted.
