Sgian Dubhs

Highwood furniture has created an exciting and unique range of Sgian Dubhs, the perfect finishing touch to traditional Highland Dress.

The handles of a Highwood Sgian Dubh are hand carved from carefully selected pieces of wood selected individually for their natural characteristics. Each piece is unique. Materials include locally sourced Scottish burr wych elm, burr oak, olive ash, bog oak, or spalted beech. The handles are finished with a natural oil wax mix and buffed to harden and sheen.

The Sgian Dubh is a traditional Scottish single edged knife. Most commonly worn in the top of the sock/stocking when wearing a kilt, normally on side of the wearers dominant hand. The name is Scots Gaelic, the word 'sgian' means knife or dagger and 'dubh' means black, referring to the colour of the handle which was originally made from black hardwood.

All Highwood Sgian Dubhs are hand made in Alyth, Scotland with locally sourced woods (except where stated) with Sheffield steel blades.

Custom bespoke Sgian Dubhs and knives with various woods and blade options are available. The stainless steel blades can be engraved with your own text or logo. Please get in touch to discuss options further.

When worn as part of the national dress of Scotland, the sgian-dubh is legal in Scotland, England, and Wales: in Scotland under the Criminal Law (Consolidation) (Scotland) Act 1995 sec. 49, sub-sec. 5(c)
